The film is based on the true story of the 1950s boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was wrongly convicted of murder and spent 19 years in prison. Carter’s story was chronicled in a 1965 nonfiction book by Norman Mailer, and the film adaptation was written by Dan Gordon.
