What is an NPI Number?
An NPI (National Provider Identifier) number is a unique 10-digit identification number assigned to health care providers in the United States. This number is used to identify providers in all healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practices. The NPI number was created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2004 as part of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
